MAI item in Wall Street Journal!

Pictured here is an item at MAI that was featured in the May 7 Wall Street Journal article titled “A Gardener’s Furniture.”  The article describes antique potting tables as primarily French and English work tables that are popular indoors as well as outdoors these days. As we well know!

DEALERS GET NATIONAL ATTENTION – AGAIN !

From time to time, MAI’s dealers gain national attention in magazines we love to read, and Southern Living‘s April 2011 issue is an example of just that. Turn to the article ”Calm & Collected,” and you’ll notice a lovely trumeau painted by our own Pruitt-Littleton Decorative Artists. This is not the first time their work has been seen nationally. A sofa they painted was featured on the cover of the May 2010 issue of Veranda magazine.

MAI dealers Merri Pruitt and Jimmy Littleton have been working with decorative painting for 25+ years, first in New Orleans and now in Houston. While living in New Orleans, they worked primarily in the Garden District alongside top decorators and designers. Working with them in New Orleans’ mansions, restaurants, and hotels, they came to appreciate how antiques and painted finishes should be approached. Katrina interrupted their business, though, and Merri and Jimmy relocated to Houston’s Heights.

Today they live and work in the Heights in a bungalow and a 1,200 square foot studio. Many well-known Houston antique dealers and decorators know them as a source for painted floors, stenciling, and — their favorite — painted furniture. Their business is always growing. Pruitt-Littleton recently found a local furniture maker to make mirrors, tables, and bath vanities for them. MAI’s customers can find Jimmy and Merri’s wonderful creations at the store. Their inventory sells and is always changing. Looking at these pictures, anyone can see why.

CHANGING AND GROWING AGAIN!

Vasser Bailey assisting at the front desk

MAI’s CUSTOMERS TELL US THEY LOVE COMING IN TO THE STORE because it is always changing and fresh. We agree!

New dealers have joined us recently. Zoe Murphy-Compton, a long-time decorator in Houston and Dallas (she also sells at The Mews there), currently resides in Gonzales. Added too are Lindra Petty and Alan Smith, of Parkhouse Antiques, Dallas. At the back of the store a space is now occupied by Christa Hurley, a well-known Atlanta and Dallas dealer in antique prints and lithos. These fabulous new dealers offer the looks YOU are looking for.

This new year has brought two welcome additions to our front desk staff: Barbara McAuliffe and Vasser Bailey. Barbara’s previous work experience includes business consulting and software development. Especially appreciated at MAI are her organizational and computer skills. Vasser’s time is valuable, since she is currently studying interior design, so we value her working behind the front desk. These two are perfect fits for MAI!

Finally, just this past week, walls started coming down in preparation for adding even more new dealer space. It’s exciting to anticipate what’s coming next at the store.

DECORATING RESOLUTIONS FOR 2011

Live with what you really love

Live with what you really love

OUR HOMES… We live there, love there, and build our lives there. Here from MAI’s dealers, decorators, and the internet, some tried-and-true resolutions for making our homes just what we’ll love in 2011.

LIVE WITH WHAT YOU REALLY LOVE
You know those pieces, the ones you see and immediately fall in love with. Those you acquire right away or forever wish you had.
When it’s time to buy, look for items of quality that you love, that reflect you, not just the first pieces you find on sale. If this means doing without some other things for a while in order to upgrade, so be it. In the long run you’ll be happy you have something that you love and that quite possibly never goes out of style.

MIX THINGS UP A LITTLE
It’s a new year and you want a new you, right? Try a fresh look for your home, too.

Try upholstering iron and industrial pieces

Try upholstering iron and industrial pieces

Update a room with fresh paint, or move existing items around or to other rooms. Add some new elements, and mix up a style or two. For example, if you lean toward contemporary, add one or two antique items to make a statement. Already have lots of antiques? Lighten up with an abstract painting. Have a metal or industrial piece upholstered with neutral colored linen, burlap, or duck… instant update!

GET ORGANIZED
Clutter can outdate a home, fast. Resolve to make a clean sweep through one room at a time (it doesn’t have to be done all at once). Take everything off visible surfaces, clean those counters and shelves, and then think efficiency. If you previously had been taking too many steps to get things done, take action now to correct. Only put back the items you must have, and relocate them nearer to areas where you actually use them. If you find items you no longer need, donate them. Store out of sight what you do not use regularly. Bring in new containers such as baskets, trays, or vintage suitcases for stacking on the floor. Remember, “less is more” these days.

Organize in different ways

CREATE A SPARKBOOK
While you are decluttering, reduce the number of magazines that you haven’t gotten to this year. Go through them, pulling out pictures of the looks that you feel drawn to. Place all of these in a folder titled “Decorating Ideas 2011.” When you have time, look through them for inspiration.

It all goes back to making your home your sanctuary. In the busy lives we lead, what could be better?
